    IIT post-graduate gives the Rupee its new symbol

    D Udaya Kumar a post-graduate from IIT Bombay is the designer of the Indian Rupee symbol. His winning entry also gets prize money of Rs 2,50,000.

    Udaya Kumar’s design for the Indian Rupee was selected by a five-member jury from entries submitted for a competition held by the Ministry of Finance. The conditions for the design were that the symbol should be in a national language script, should represent the historical and cultural ethos of the country and be applicable to the standard keyboard.

    Udaya Kumar explains that the symbol he designed incorporates elements of Devanagiri and Roman script and is based on the tricolor.

    D. Udaya Kumar is from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India and pursued his doctoral studies at Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay. Udaya received his Master’s degree, MDes in Visual communication from IDC, IIT Bombay and Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from School of Architecture and Planning (SAP)Anna University,Chennai. His areas of interest include graphic design, typography, type design and design research with special focus on Tamil typography. He has just completed his PhD on Tamil Typography at IDC, IIT Bombay under the guidance of Prof. G.V.Sreekumar. He has also designed a Tamil font named “Parashakti” as a mini project at IDC. He joins IIT Guwahati as Assistant Professor.

    PanIIT Alumni India Team meets President

    The PanIIT Alumni India team met with President Prathibha Patil to extend an invitation to her for the PanIIT Global Conference to be held at Noida from the 29th to the 31st of October.

    An IITian who got into Google

    What’s so special about this – aren’t there are many such students who pass out from various IITs and joining big companies like Google? This 21-year-old, Naga Naresh Karutura from Teeparru, in Andhra Pradesh is special. He has no legs, and moves around in his powered wheel chair.

    Born to parents who did not go to school but instilled in their son the importance of studying, Nagesh went to a village school. In 1993 he suffered an accident in which both his legs were amputated up to his hip. His parents were poor, but they didn’t give up on him. Moving to a town, he joined a missionary school from where he completed his tenth standard.

    He later joined IIT-Madras to study Computer Science. Even went to Boston along with four others for his internship. He graduated in 2008 and is now with Google’s R&D.

    This ever smiling, optimistic youngster moving considers himself extremely lucky and says that if you are motivated and show some initiative, people around you will always help you.

    Welcome to the PanIIT blog! PanIIT Alumni India brings this blog to the alumni of the seven IITs with the aim of spreading news, ideas, and more among the alumni community.

    This blog is a meeting place for alumni from all the seven IITs and is maintained by members of PanIIT Alumni India. PanIIT Alumni India is an umbrella organization covering alumni of all 7 IITs, to evolve a brand that would provide stron fraternity among IIT alumni.
